official numbers from the poll say that 57% of debate watchers believed Hillary Clinton won, while 34% of debate watchers believed Donald Trump won. CNN cautioned that its viewer polling base skewed slightly toward Democrats because they tend to watch debates in larger numbers, but even with that slight skew factored in, it means Hillary still won by around a twenty point margin. In CNN’s on-camera focus group of undecided voters, based on a show of hands it appeared that fourteen of them believed Hillary Clinton won, while just one of them believed Donald Trump won. Another seven of them said that neither of them won.
It’s a strong showing for Hillary Clinton, but not as good as her performance at the first presidential debate, when 62% of debate watchers said she won.
The results Sunday also track closely with watchers’ pre-debate preference. Fifty-eight percent of debate watchers said they were supporting Hillary Clinton before the debate.
